Electrical repair in Raleigh, Cary and Apex

When to call us

  • Part of the house lost power but the breaker isn't tripped
  • A breaker or GFCI keeps tripping
  • Lights flicker or dim
  • An outlet or switch is warm, buzzing, sparking or smells like burning

Troubleshooting is where experience shows. We test methodically, from the panel to the breaker to every device on the circuit, until we find the real cause: a loose connection, a failed breaker, or wiring someone got wrong years ago.

If something smells like burning or is hot to the touch, turn that circuit off and call or text us. If you see smoke or flames, call 911.

What the work involves

Tracing the fault is most of a repair. A dead outlet is often caused by a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit or a loose connection in a box upstream, not the outlet itself.

Fixing it properly means replacing the failed device, breaker or section of wire, and correcting anything unsafe we find along the way, such as an outlet on a breaker that’s too large for it.

How we do it

  1. We ask what happened and when. A tripping breaker that only trips with two appliances running points somewhere different than one that trips at random.
  2. We test at the panel and along the circuit with meters rather than swapping parts until something works.
  3. We explain what we found, in plain English, and fix it once you agree.

In one Cary home a circuit had lost its neutral somewhere in the walls. We broke the circuit into segments and tested each one until we found the bad connection, rather than rewiring the whole run.

What affects the cost

  • How long it takes to find the fault; an intermittent problem takes longer than one that’s always there
  • What the fix turns out to be: a device, a breaker, or a section of damaged wire
  • Access to the wiring, such as attic, crawlspace or finished walls
  • Whether the fix uncovers other work that has to be corrected for safety

Permits

Most repairs that replace a device or breaker like for like don’t need a permit. Repairs that replace wiring or add a circuit usually do, and we pull it. Each town page lists the right office.

Common questions

How quickly can you come out for a repair in Raleigh, Cary or Apex?

We're based in Cary, so Cary, Apex and Raleigh are close by. Call or text and we'll give you the earliest time we can get there.

What should I do if I smell burning from an outlet?

Turn off the breaker for that circuit, stop using the outlet, and call us. If you see smoke or flames, call 911.

Why do I have dead outlets when no breakers are tripped?

Most often it's a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere else on the circuit, or a loose connection in a box upstream. We trace it with testers rather than guessing.

Do you work on older homes?

Yes. We regularly correct older wiring, reversed polarity and missing protection in homes across the Triangle.

  • I am very pleased with Roy Electric as a whole. I had them go through all my outlets and switches, as well as lights and fixtures to make copper connections to what was mostly aluminum wiring throughout my house. They scheduled me quickly and got the work completed in a timely manner.

Hunter met with me first to go through the house and everything. He fixed an outlet on the spot and took the extra time to open and identify some outlets that that were already good, and this saved me some money. I have to give a big thank you and much praise to Spencer.

Spencer was my primary tech assigned to me. He is a huge asset to this company and I can't thank him enough for being so focused and truly putting in maximum effort on this job.

Spencer spent probably 8 or 9 hours in my attic, tracing wire from multiple junction boxes, replacing them all and making sure everything was traced properly. The way the boxes and wire were originally installed and ran were a total mess.

If you own a house that was built before 1970, It's very likely the way things were done back then and probably though the early 90s just weren't done to a very good and modern standard. I'd give these guys a call.
