EV charger installation in Raleigh, Cary and Apex

When to call us

  • You bought or ordered an electric car or plug-in hybrid
  • Charging from a regular 120-volt outlet takes too long
  • Your existing charger outlet is warm, scorched or tripping
  • You want to charge outside or in a detached garage

Every EV charger needs its own circuit, sized for the charger and protected by a breaker that matches your panel. Getting that circuit from the panel to where you park is most of the job.

What the work involves

Hardwired chargers, like the Tesla Wall Connector, connect directly to a dedicated circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps. They can charge faster and avoid wear on a plug.

NEMA 14-50 outlets take a plug-in charger on a 50-amp circuit. You can take the charger with you when you move.

Either way, the circuit is sized for continuous use, as the electrical code requires for EV charging, and the panel has to have capacity for it.

How we do it

  1. We check your panel’s capacity and existing load, then choose the charger amperage it can support.
  2. We plan the route from the panel to the charger: along the garage wall, through a crawlspace or basement, or outside in conduit.
  3. We install the circuit, breaker and charger or outlet, and test it under load.
  4. The town inspects the new circuit.

In one Holly Springs home the panel was inside the house, so we ran 25 feet of 6-gauge cable through the crawlspace to a 60-amp charger on the side of the house.

Already have a charger outlet that’s acting up? Melted plugs and scorched outlets are common with low-quality devices and loose connections. We replace the outlet and repair the wire behind it.

What affects the cost

  • The distance from the panel to the charger, and whether the run goes through finished walls, a crawlspace or conduit outside
  • The charger amperage and the wire size it needs
  • Whether the panel has room, or needs tandem breakers, a subpanel or an upgrade
  • Hardwired charger or 14-50 outlet
  • Permit fees, which vary by town

Permits

A new EV charger circuit needs an electrical permit and an inspection. The City of Raleigh, for example, lists vehicle charging stations among the residential work that needs one. We pull the permit. Rebate programs depend on your utility: most of the Triangle is on Duke Energy, but Apex and Wake Forest run their own utilities. The town pages list which utility serves each town.

Common questions

Do EV charger rebates differ between Raleigh and Apex?

They can. Raleigh, Cary and most of Wake County are served by Duke Energy, while Apex has its own town-owned electric utility, and some northern and eastern Wake County homes are on Wake Electric. Programs change often, so ask when you call and we'll point you to what's available for your address.

Should I get a hardwired charger or a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Hardwired chargers like the Tesla Wall Connector can charge faster and avoid wear on an outlet. A 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a portable charger and take it with you. We'll help you pick based on your car and how you drive.

Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger?

Not always. We check your panel's capacity and existing load first. Many homes can add a 40- to 60-amp circuit without an upgrade.

Can you install a charger I already bought?

Yes. We've installed Tesla Wall Connectors, Lectron and other brands, as well as NEMA 14-50 outlets for plug-in chargers.

  • Had Them out to install a new EV charger. Excellent work, and at a much better cost than competitors. Don’t try to upsell me. Great work at a good price.

    Jeremy F., Raleigh September 2026

  • Bobby & Spencer did an absolutely outstanding job adding a 60amp breaker, running 60amp wiring up the garage wall, above the garage and down the other wall to install my EV charger. They did this in very hot weather so I was sure to put a fan in the garage and provide lots of cold beverages for them.

Bobby & Spencer were incredibly kind, courteous, friendly & professional. They also installed an additional receptacle in my laundry room. Roy Electric is a pleasure to work with and Bobby & Spencer are definite assets to the company.
