Ceiling fan installation in Raleigh, Cary and Apex

When to call us

  • Replacing a light with a fan, or adding a fan where there's no box
  • An existing fan wobbles, hums or the light kit doesn't work
  • You want separate switches or a remote for the fan and light
  • Vaulted or porch ceilings you can't reach safely

A ceiling fan is only as good as what’s holding it up. We mount every fan to a fan-rated box, balance it, and make sure the switches or remote do what you expect.

What the work involves

Replacing a fan or light on an existing box is the most common job. A light box often isn’t rated to carry a moving fan, so we replace it with a fan-rated brace when it isn’t.

Adding a fan where there’s no box means cutting in a fan-rated brace and running power to it, often with a new switch.

Tall ceilings and porches need a longer downrod, an angled mount for sloped ceilings, and damp- or wet-rated fans outdoors.

How we do it

  1. We check the existing box, wiring and switches, and the ceiling height and slope.
  2. We install the brace if needed, assemble and hang the fan, and balance it.
  3. We set up separate fan and light control if you want it, with wall switches or a remote.

In one Raleigh home we hung a fan 17 feet up on a sloped ceiling. That took splicing extra length into the wiring for a custom downrod and fitting an angled mount.

What affects the cost

  • Ceiling height and slope
  • Whether there’s a fan-rated box, or one has to be added
  • Whether power and a switch already exist where the fan is going
  • Separate fan and light switches, or a remote
  • The number of fans installed in one visit

Permits

Replacing a light or fan on an existing box usually doesn’t need a permit. Running new wiring to a location that had none generally does, and we pull it. Each town page lists the right office.

Common questions

How soon can you install a ceiling fan in Raleigh or Cary?

Call or text with the room and ceiling height, and we'll give you our next available time.

Can you put a fan where there's only a light now?

Usually. We replace the box with a fan-rated brace so the fan is properly supported, and can add a separate switch for the light.

Do outdoor fans need anything special?

Yes. Covered porches need damp-rated fans and fully exposed spots need wet-rated ones. The circuit should be GFCI protected.

How high can you go?

We regularly install fans on 16- to 18-foot ceilings.

  • Bobby & Spencer did an absolutely outstanding job adding a 60amp breaker, running 60amp wiring up the garage wall, above the garage and down the other wall to install my EV charger. They did this in very hot weather so I was sure to put a fan in the garage and provide lots of cold beverages for them.

Bobby & Spencer were incredibly kind, courteous, friendly & professional. They also installed an additional receptacle in my laundry room. Roy Electric is a pleasure to work with and Bobby & Spencer are definite assets to the company.

Joel H., Four Oaks July 2026

  • I recently hired Roy's Electric for a second time in the last year and a half. Again, the two techs they sent were just great. Right on time, incredibly polite, very professional and very capable. I had several light fixtures to be removed and replacements to be installed.

The guys made sure the new fixtures were installed at the proper place and height before completing each fixture. The old fixtures were removed, and clean up after their work was thorough. On a more personal note, they were so kind to me and to my dog who is not a big fan of visitors.

They did their work well and timely while also engaging with the dog to make everyone more comfortable. Next time I need electrical work at my house, I won't look anywhere else. I highly recommend Roy's Electric for your electrical needs.
