Outlets and dedicated circuits in Raleigh, Cary and Apex

When to call us

  • Not enough outlets, or extension cords everywhere
  • A new appliance, freezer, dehumidifier or hot tub needs its own circuit
  • Bathroom, kitchen, garage or outdoor outlets aren't GFCI protected
  • Switches or outlets are loose, warm or discolored

Most of our work is adding outlets where people actually need them, giving a new appliance its own circuit, or bringing older rooms up to today’s safety standards with GFCI and AFCI protection.

What the work involves

New outlets on an existing circuit, for a TV above a fireplace, a home office or an outdoor space.

Dedicated circuits that feed one appliance only. Freezers, microwaves, dehumidifiers, workshop tools and some bathroom fixtures need one so they don’t trip breakers or overload wiring.

240-volt outlets for dryers, ranges and EV chargers.

GFCI and AFCI protection for kitchens, baths, garages, crawlspaces and outdoors, either at the outlet or as a breaker in the panel.

How we do it

  1. We check whether the existing circuit has room for what you’re adding, or whether it needs its own circuit.
  2. We plan the route from the panel, through the attic, crawlspace or between floors, with as little drywall work as possible.
  3. We install, label the new breaker, and test the outlet.

In one Cary home the panel was in the garage and the new dedicated outlet was on the second floor. We ran the circuit up through the house without opening finished walls.

What affects the cost

  • Adding to an existing circuit, or running a new one from the panel
  • The distance from the panel and what’s in the way, such as finished walls, attic or crawlspace access
  • 120-volt or 240-volt, and the wire size the appliance needs
  • Whether the panel has room for another breaker
  • GFCI or AFCI protection required for the location

Permits

Replacing an outlet or switch like for like usually doesn’t need a permit. New circuits do, and we pull the permit and meet the inspector. Each town page lists the right office.

Where we do this work

From our office in Cary, we serve homes and businesses across the Triangle, most often in Raleigh, Cary and Apex, and in nearby towns including Durham, Chapel Hill, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina and Wake Forest.

Common questions

Can you replace two-prong outlets in an older Raleigh home?

Yes. Depending on the wiring, we either run a ground or install GFCI protection that meets code. We'll explain which option fits your house before we start.

What's a dedicated circuit and when do I need one?

It's a circuit that feeds one appliance only. Hot tubs, EV chargers, freezers, microwaves and some dehumidifiers need one so they don't trip breakers or overload wiring.

Can you add an outlet above my fireplace for a TV?

Yes. We do this often, and can hide the wiring in the wall.

Do you install hot tub and spa hookups?

Yes, including the outdoor disconnect and GFCI protection they require.

  • I am very pleased with Roy Electric as a whole. I had them go through all my outlets and switches, as well as lights and fixtures to make copper connections to what was mostly aluminum wiring throughout my house. They scheduled me quickly and got the work completed in a timely manner.

Hunter met with me first to go through the house and everything. He fixed an outlet on the spot and took the extra time to open and identify some outlets that that were already good, and this saved me some money. I have to give a big thank you and much praise to Spencer.

Spencer was my primary tech assigned to me. He is a huge asset to this company and I can't thank him enough for being so focused and truly putting in maximum effort on this job.

Spencer spent probably 8 or 9 hours in my attic, tracing wire from multiple junction boxes, replacing them all and making sure everything was traced properly. The way the boxes and wire were originally installed and ran were a total mess.

If you own a house that was built before 1970, It's very likely the way things were done back then and probably though the early 90s just weren't done to a very good and modern standard. I'd give these guys a call.

  • Did a fantastic job, changed out a 220V receptacle to one rated for 50 A. Rewired my panel to make it work and ensured had the right size wire.

  • Bobby was an absolute delight. At 26 years old, he restored my faith in the future of the younger generation. He was technically qualified having 7 years of experience and was educational to me to help understand what was happening with my light switches no longer operating.

I would gladly call back Roy Electric and ask for Bobby for any of my future electrical needs.

  • Your go to when it comes to electrical issues. Trust me. It started with a simple pull of a chain that was “connected” to a smoke alarm. The first round of troubleshooting came up empty. Second round, fresh eyes, found the issue (no offense to the first time folks), fixed that issue.

Third time, same thing happened, not the chain, but the switch. Unplugging a shop vac, because the A/C decided it was time to quit (never ends)…R.E. sends Bobby back. This time he is at a loss as to what made this happen again. He calls for back-up. The Boss comes in.

Did some deep trouble shooting…AHA…of course it’s not even close to where all thought it would be. It was behind that panel, you know, that panel we so proudly flip a switch to reset that “breaker” and voila we did it! We made a light turn back on.

Little do we know that there are a gazillion wires behind this panel of switches. Where if one line, this so called neutral line(?) isn’t connected or wired correctly it creates havoc. Two lines at this #21 breaker.

One line shorter than the other but a smaller piece was added to make it same length so it could be together then to have a crack in that smaller wire. This not good. Things happen over time.

Bobby, his Boss, the two other gentlemen who worked this huge issue which turns out it was rather a small one, they could very well be “heroes”. Because I certainly am grateful for their knowledge. Their patience when I’m asking “how or why” does this happen.

We flip a switch, light goes on … light goes out…when this doesn’t happen sheer terror! Long story short, these folks know their stuff. Recommend them for any job that has to do with red green white black copper neutral wires … thank you.

  • Bobby & Spencer did an absolutely outstanding job adding a 60amp breaker, running 60amp wiring up the garage wall, above the garage and down the other wall to install my EV charger. They did this in very hot weather so I was sure to put a fan in the garage and provide lots of cold beverages for them.

Bobby & Spencer were incredibly kind, courteous, friendly & professional. They also installed an additional receptacle in my laundry room. Roy Electric is a pleasure to work with and Bobby & Spencer are definite assets to the company.

  • Roy Electric did an awesome job adding an outlet under my deck as I requested. Their work was very thorough, done with care and professionalism.
